WOMEN'S SOCCER MAKING HISTORY WITH FIRSTS ALL AROUND
By Coach Bevivino

A storybook ending to the regular season unfolded recently, as the FIT soccer team needed a win against BMCC in the regular season finale to pull into a three way tie for first place.  After getting the win, a 3-2 decision that was decided in the final 13 seconds of the match, the Tigers needed more help by way of a three way coin toss that would determine the top seed for the region playoffs.

Needing a win against BMCC on Saturday the 20th of October to get into a three-way tie for first in the league, the team rose to the challenge.  After FIT took the lead into half, BMCC drew even early into the second half.  Head Coach Bevivino said, “It was back and forth the whole game, we would score and then they would score and it just kept going that way.”  However with time ticking away Brittany Sheeran received a pass down the left side of the field just over the center-line and took it straight to goal.  She shot from about 12 yards out just out of reach of the BMCC goalie, and scored the game-winning goal with 13 seconds left on the clock.  The final score was 3-2. The Tigers had done it; first time in school history they finished first in the league.

However, the team was not alone at the top, they found themselves in a three-way tie for first place, and needed lady luck to be on their side.  The decision for playoff rankings would come down to a three-way coin-toss.  “The team and I were just getting back from the game when we got the call.  Our Athletic Director, Kerri Ann, gave me the news; she had won the toss, and we were now in the first seed for the playoffs,” recalled Bevivino.  This news meant they would play the fourth place team, BMCC, in the first round of playoffs (Wednesday the 24th at 12:30pm), and have home field advantage through the regional tournament.

The team arrived Wednesday morning, determined to keep their season going.  “From the second the girls got on the field they knew they had a job to do” Miller remembers from the game’s start.  Fourteen minutes into the game the Tigers got on to the board.  Captain Briana Marquit received a pass, across the center from Fresman Hayley Reid, giving her a clean look at the net from 25 yards out and drove the ball into the far side giving the team a lead.   Partway through the second half, the tigers would find the BMCC goal again off an unsettled corner kick.  Brittany Sheeran found teammate Hannah Rodriguez for the goal.  The final whistle blew again, and the Tigers made the playoffs.  The final score was 2-0, giving freshman goalie Katelyn Snow another shutout.  “The team clicked today… the defense and offense were on point, passes looked sharp, defense held strong, and Snowy did an amazing job in net, and the offense was relentless on their goal,” said Bevivino, who also added, “I am so proud of this team, the way they have come together, adapted to every situation thrown at them and have raised the bar yet again.”

This is the first time the Women's soccer team has made the final round of the regional playoffs.  They will play Nassau CC Saturday morning (10-27) at 9:30AM at Suffolk CC.  FIT and Nassau split this season, each winning a game against the other.
