OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD TEAM GEARS UP FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
The FIT Track and Field team is preparing for their Championship races, with the Northeast District Championships coming up this weekend, followed by the NJCAA Championships the following weekend. The team will travel to Essex Community College on Saturday and Sunday, April 28 and 29 for the NE Districts, and then take a trip to Alfred State College on May 3-5 for the NJCAA Championships.
The student-athletes are starting to peak for these coming meets, as many have set personal records and even a stadium record in their most recent meet in East Stroudsburg, PA. Chessa Giulia (Pordenone, Italy/Liceo Majorana Pordenone) set a stadium record in the 400 meter dash, running the event in 57.04. The previous record was 57.17 from Benita Jones, California(PA.), a record she held since 1985. The finish was also a meet record, held by ESU's Jasmine Johnson since 2009 (previous record was 57.32).
Two FIT men also set personal records at the ESU meet; Sean Reed ran the 800meter in 2:10, while Travis Wood ran a 5:06.65 1500 meter run. Wood improved his time by more than 3 seconds since his previous 1500 meter run at the New Jersey Invitational.
After winning the high jump competition at last year's NJCAA Championships and becoming FIT's first National Champion in Track and Field, Casey Buie has already tied that 1.50m mark this season, and is hoping to improve and become a back-to-back National Champion. Teammate Jacquelyn Guglielmo has also reached that height this season, and once surpassed it with a 1.56m jump at the Wagner Invitational.
