Tomorrow’s Top Designers to Display Their Talent on the Runway
FIT’s Graduating Fashion Designers are The Future of Fashion
The Fashion Institute of Technology’s (FIT) top graduating Fashion Design students will present their designs to an audience of fashion notables at The Future of Fashion, the college’s annual end-of-year runway show, on Wednesday, May 2, at 4:30 and 7:30 pm at FIT. This professionally produced event will present sportswear, special occasion, knitwear, intimate apparel, and children’s wear designed for fall 2012 by some of the world’s most talented young designers. The show is supported by a $2 million gift from alumnus Calvin Klein, and the company he founded, Calvin Klein, Inc.
Eleven major designers, including Diane von Furstenberg, Amsale Aberra, Victor Alfaro, and Josie Natori, are working with the students as mentors and critics, visiting classrooms throughout the spring semester to critique their designs and to select the most exceptional garments from each category for special citation.
Five fashion/media professionals will decide which garments are outstanding enough to make it to the runway. They are Laura Brown (Harper’s Bazaar), Kate Betts (Time, Inc.), Alana Kelen (VH1), Lilliana Vazquez (NBC), and Joe Zee (Elle).
Leading makeup artist Janice Kinjo will return for her second year, leading a team of M.A.C. make-up artists using M.A.C. products. Jenni Lee, who has worked with Scarlett Johansson, Ben Affleck, Mos Def, Death Cab for Cutie, and Paramore, will join the team as stylist.
The young designers selected for the fashion show also will vie for cash awards from Cotton Incorporated, a show sponsor. Students who use cotton in 95 percent of their outfits will be eligible to win $2,000 in each of the five categories.
The Future of Fashion will take place in the John E. Reeves Great Hall on the FIT campus. Admission is by invitation only. However, the 7:30 pm show will be streamed live at www.fitnyc.edu/futureoffashion.
