2010-2011 Season Recap

2011 Swim Team

            The 2010-2011 began with great expectations, but with only three returning swimmers and a new coaching staff. New Head Coach Daniel was joined by former swimmer Gwen Kittell as an assistant coach, and by December assistant coach Mary Dooe was on board.  At the NJCAA North East District Championship Meet, FIT got off to a great start with the team of Mackenzie Jameson, Michelle Welles, Abby Cochran, and Liz Veith finishing 5th in the 200-yard Free Relay with a time of 1:59.80.  Michelle Welles finished 3rd in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:30.36.  The relay of Jameson, Welles, Cochran, and Veith finished 3rd in the 400-yard Medley Relay with a time of 4:59.07.  Liz Veith finished 4th in the 200-yard Free with a time of 2:30.39.  Abby Cochran finished 5th in the 100 yard-Breast with a time of 1:19.41 and 3rd in the 200-yard Breast with a time of 2:50.10.  FIT finished 9th overall at the North East District Championship Meet.

 

 

             Eight swimmers qualified for the 2011 NJCAA National Championships in Buffalo, NY.  The team of Welles, Julie Platania, Kate Maldijian, and Cochran finished 8th in the country in the 400-yard Medley Relay with a best time of 4:39:44.  The team of Dana Beckley, Veith, Platania, and Welles finished 9th in the 800-yard Free Relay with a time of 9:22.82.  The team of Jameson, Platania, Maldijian, and Beckley finished 10th in the 200-yard Free Relay with a best time of 1:54.36.   Michelle Welles finished 15th in the 200-yard IM with a best time of 2:29.21.  The team of Welles, Platania, Cochran, and Maldijian finished 9th in the 200-yard Medley Relay with a best time of 2:05.77.  Michelle Welles finished 14th in the 400-yard IM with a best time of 5:21.39 and in the 200-yard Back with a time of 2:29.42.  Abby Cochran finished 13th in the 200-yard Breast with a best time of 2:45.93.  The team of Beckley, Welles, Jameson, and Maldijian finished 9th in the 400-yard Free Relay with a best time of 4:08.25.  FIT finished 9th overall with a total of 103 points, a great end to a great season.  Michelle Welles received the SUNY Chancellors Student Athlete Award for the 2010-2011 season.

   

 

 

 


 

 

2009-2010 Season Recap 

 2010 Swim Team

 

            In the Fashion Institute of Technology’s second season, Coach Mike Dallas guided the team in a winning season leading up to the NJCAA North East District Championship Meet.  With the help of new swimmers and returning swimmers the team finished 3rd at the meet.  The team of Hayley Grassetti, Gwen Kittell, Hannelore Schaffner, and Emily Morris finished 3rd in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:53.60.  Hannelore Schaffner finished 5th in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:35.50 and Hayley Grassetti finished 6th with a time of 2:40.83.  The team of Grassetti, Abby Cochran, Schaffner, and Kittell finished 2nd in the 400-yard Medley Relay with a time of 4:45.  Kaitlyn Egan finished 4th in the Women’s 1 meter diving competition.  The team of Grassetti, Cochran, Schaffner, and Kittell finished 1st in the 200-yard Medley Relay with a time of 2:07.37.  Hannelore Schaffner finished 2nd in the 100-yard Fly with a time of 1:08.59 and Hayley Grassetti finished 3rd with a time of 1:09.89.  Gwen Kittell finished 2nd in the 200-yard Free with a time of 2:15.72 and Emily Morris finished 6th with a time of 2:20.51.  Hayley Grassetti finished 4th in the 100-yard Back with the time 1:11.04.  The team of Grassetti, Liz Veith, Schaffner, and Dana Beckley finished 3rd in the 800-yard Free Relay with a time of 9:31.98.  Gwen Kittell Finished 6th in the 100-yard Free with a time of 1:02.48.  Abby Cochran finished 4th in the 200-yard Breast with a time of 2:50.64.  Hannelore Schaffner finished 2nd in the 200-yard Fly with a time of 2:45.94.  The team of Beckley, Kittell, Morris, and Erin Kelly finished 4th in 400-yard Free Relay with a time of 4:15.83.

 

 

           Nine swimmers qualified for the 2010 NJCAA National Championships in Fort Pierce, Florida.  The team started off the meet in a great way, the team of Kittell, Cochran, Grassetti, and Schaffner placed 5th in the 400-yard Medley Relay with a time of 4:33.35.  The team of Kelly, Beckley, Morris, and Veith finished 9th in the 800-yard Free Relay with a time of 9:42.08.  The team of Grassetti, Schaffner, Morris, and Kittell finished 5th in the 200-yard Free Relay with a time of 1:50.14.  The team of Grassetti, Cochran, Schaffner, and Kittell finished 6th in the 200-yard Medley Relay with a time of 2:03.22.  Gwen Kittell finished 11th in the 200-yard Free with a time of 2:13.66.  Abby Cochran finished 12th in the 200-yard Breast with a time of 2:44.25.  Hannelore Schaffner finished 9th in the 200-yard Fly with a time of 2:37.51.  The team of Kittell, Morris, Grassetti, and Schaffner finished 6th in the 400-yard Free Relay with a time of 4:02.36.  The Fashion Institute of Technology Swimming and Diving Team finished 7th in the nation at the 2010 NJCAA National Championships.

In the FIT Swimming and Diving Team’s first season, Coach Mike Dallas led the team to a 3rd place finish at the 2008-2009 North East District Championships at Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY.  Hannelore Schaffner placed 1st in the Women’s 100-yard Fly and 2nd Women’s 200-yard Fly, and 4th in the Women’s 200-yard IM.  Melissa Keulmann finished 6th in the Women’s 100-yard Breast.  Celeste Weins finished 6th in the Women’s 200-yard Breast.  FIT finished 3rd in the Women’s 400-yard Medley Relay and 4th in the Women’s 200-yard Free Relay, 400-yard Free Relay, and 200-yard Medley Relay with the team of Celeste Weins, Gwen Kittell, Emily Morris, and Hannelore Schaffner. Kaitlyn Egan finished 3rd in the Women’s 1meter diving.

 

 

 

                  In the same season swimmers Jack Eustace, Emily Morris, Dana Tarasavage, Melissa Keulmann, Celeste Weins, Gwen Kittell, Hannelore Schaffner, and diver Kaitlyn Egan qualified from the NJCAA National Championships. Hannelore Schaffner finished 5th in the Women’s 200-yard Butterfly with a time of 2:38.08, and finished 7th in the Women’s 100-yard Butterfly with a time of 1:07.56. The team of Hannelore Schaffner, Dana Tarasavage, Emily Morris, and Gwen Kittell finished 6th in the Women’s 200-yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:53.83. The Women’s Swimming and Diving Team finished 9th in the country and 5th of all non-scholarship schools at the NJCAA 2009 National Championship.  Hannelore Schaffner was awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Student Athlete Award for the 2008-2009 season.
