Student/Faculty Mini-Retreat: A Campus Conversation
Wednesday April 6th, 2011 ( 10:00AM - 12:00PM )
Fashion Institute of Technology

Please join Erik Kneubuehl, Dean for Student Development, and faculty facilitators, Susan Breton, Counseling Center, Charlotte Brown, Educational Skills, Philip Milio, Student Life, Carmita Sanchez Fong, Interior Design, Nancy Sheridan, FMM, and Samantha Kloeckener, student leader, for a mini-retreat conversation and exchange of ideas. Topics will include new challenges on today's college campus, maintaining a student-centered classroom, and the impact of ever-evolving technology on academic life.

    Multiple students said:  elevators running, completing tasks, movie night
    Other comments:   good critiques, being on time, no tests, feeling excited about class, free food, no test s and reasonable deadlines
  2. Describe a bad day on campus.
    Multiple students said:  Work due, broken facilities, overly-emotional students and faculty
    Other comments: not completing work on time, all-nighters, too many deadlines, safety threats, not enough sleep
  3. Where do students socialize?  On-campus physical space? Virtual space?
    Multiple students said: Outdoor spaces, but many said each building should have its own lounge
    Other comments: Game room, writing studio, Facebook
  4. What causes you to be stressed in your personal life?
    Comments: Commuting, family pressures, not eating, surprise visitors, cell not working, finances
  5. What causes you to be stressed in your academic life?
    Multiple students said:  technology not working, having to work in teams, lack of space, lack of communication resources, no kosher food, balancing studies-friends-sleep, feeling nobody cares, time management
    Other comments: Not enough open lab time, too many deadlines, lack of sleep, keeping up with technology
  6. What could teachers do to improve the classroom experience?
    Multiple students said:  More industry-based and city-based experiences, more blended learning, more visual aids, listen to students
    Other comments: Follow syllabus, use Angel (not so many different systems), consistency with deadlines, understand the amount of work due in other classes, less lecture, a variety of teaching modes, more interactive lessons, more hands-on activities, timely e-mails, compassion, draw on student opinions, more current adjuncts, faculty current with technology
  7. What do you do with your “off-line” time?
    Comments: Explore the city, galleries/museums, homework, athletics , music
